Dear Japanese Consumer Friends
What great sadness for me to hear that the new bill has now passed in Japan that makes so many wrong assumptions about us as consumers.
What can I say, except to congratulate each and every one of you for your dedicated and intelligent international and national campaign against this bill. At all times you appeared to be reasonable and organized and had much credibility in your intense campaigning. My deepest sympathy to you in that you lost the campaign, but you most certainly "won the war". In looking at
those members of parliament who voted against the bill, I'd say that there were quite a substantial number who have had their minds changed during the process. There were a lot of people who have learned a lot about mental health consumers/ users and have been prepared to vote against the bill.
These are each people who represent an element of success and achievement for those of you who fought so hard. This is not so much a failure but a real lesson in how you've managed to educate so many, and do so under extreme pressure. Despite the outcome, I want you each to congratulate one another. You worked SO HARD, SO INTELLIGENTLY, SO DILIGENTLY that you deserve congratulations. You never gave up and you won the respect of many, at home and across the seas. We will not forget the great campaign that you ran, you all serve as an example of what is best about consumer / user participation and the value of lobbying. Every best wish to all of you
there in Japan, thanks for your example, congratulations on your work, we only wish that it had been rewarded as a success, but that was not meant to be.
Remember you've only lost one battle, not the " consumer participation" war!!
